The question came from a fourteen year old at her own table, which is how these things usually arrive.
Not what does God do for you. What do you like about Him.
She started to answer and produced, as she tells it, about four seconds of silence and then something about faithfulness that she has heard other people say. The girl accepted it and moved on to the potatoes. Nobody at that table noticed anything.
But she has been carrying it since March. Because the honest version is that eight years of asking for one outcome have narrowed her whole field of view, and the outcome now fills the window, and God has become the direction she faces when she is asking for it.
She still prays. She prays hard. She would tell you her prayer life is strong, and by most measurements it is, and there is a Person somewhere behind it whom she could not describe to a fourteen year old.
If your asking has filled the whole window, come and sit at this table. Eight years of praying for something real is not going to be called shallow here.

Narrowing is what carrying does
Let us describe what happened accurately, because the wrong description will turn into shame by Sunday.
A need carried long enough narrows the field. That is not a spiritual failure, it is what attention does under pressure: anybody in real trouble looks at the trouble. Nobody in a burning building admires the architecture.
So the Person did not get displaced by a decision. He got crowded out by a genuine emergency that has been running for eight years, and that is a very different thing from indifference.
You are not shallow. Nothing about eight years of one request has made God recede from you. I am not saying it to make you feel better. The written word says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust (Psalm 103:14), which is Him accounting for what pressure does to a person rather than being disappointed by it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that hold at a table with a fourteen year old asking questions.
The man who wanted the Person in a dry place
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not an exercise in appreciating God properly.
There is a psalm written by somebody in a wilderness, in real trouble, with enemies behind him and no water in front of him, and his opening line is not about the trouble.
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee.Psalm 63:1
Thirsteth for thee. Not for water. He is genuinely thirsty, and in genuine danger, and the sentence he writes puts the Person in the object slot where the outcome would have gone.
Nobody made him do that. He was not performing for anybody. It is simply what came out of a man who had been in the tent enough.
You are being drawn toward the Person and not merely toward the answer, and the Word puts Him in that slot deliberately. That is written down out of a dry place by somebody who needed things, and the Holy Spirit, not the wording, is the one who makes it register in a woman who could not answer a child at her own table.
The outcome still matters
Something must be said before you overcorrect, because by Thursday you will be trying to want the answer less, and that is not depth, it is just a new kind of pretending.
The thing you have been asking for is real and it is still on the table. Ask for it tonight. Ask for it hard.
You are allowed the need and the Person in the same breath, and Scripture never once made a person choose. It says cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee (Psalm 55:22), where the burden goes over and the sustaining is a Person doing it rather than a situation resolving, and it is the Holy Spirit, and He is the one who has carried eight years of a single request without ever calling it narrow.
And if these eight years have cost more than anybody at this table knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So here is where the whole thing turns, and it is not a promise about the outcome, because I have not been given one and I will not invent one.
God Himself is what comes down over your life, and He arrives in person. You are not waiting on a delivery, you are receiving the One who sends it. The written word says the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (John 1:14), and dwelt is the word for pitching a tent where people actually live, and the Holy Spirit is the one that proves it true in your actual back yard tonight rather than in general.
I cannot tell you what God does about the outcome, or when. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that four seconds of silence at a table was not a verdict on eight years, and that the Person behind your asking has been at the table the entire time.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. What gives these words their weight is that you are in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how well you could describe Him. The ground under it is Scripture and the life in it is the Holy Spirit rather than merely persistent, and what God does about the outcome, and when, is His, and the outcome is His, and nothing on this page claims to know it.
- Outcome I asked for too long, you are a real need and you are not the whole sky. Psalm 103 says He knows my frame and remembers I am dust, which is God accounting for what pressure does to a person, and the Holy Spirit has never once read my narrowing as indifference. In the name of Jesus I stop letting you be the whole view.
- Shame that I could not answer a child at my own table, God has never said you over me, and you are not sitting in this yard tomorrow. Psalm 55 says cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee, where the sustaining is a Person doing it and not a situation resolving, and His Spirit has carried eight years of one request without calling it narrow. I am naming the need and the Person tonight.
- Father, You are the thirst of my soul, and Psalm 63 was written by a man in real danger who put You in the slot where the water would have gone. I thank You that Your Spirit was at that table for the whole four seconds of silence. Here is the outcome by its real name, out loud, and here is Your name after it.
