She cannot say exactly when it happened. Some time in the second year.
She used to pray out loud in the flat. Not performing, just talking, the way a person talks while making tea. And then one evening she heard herself, properly heard herself, a woman standing in a kitchen saying words to nobody, and the room came back at her the way a room does when it is not going to answer.
She finished the sentence. She has not said one out loud since.
It is not that she stopped praying. She prays constantly, in her head, all day, in a running thread she could not switch off if she tried. But she has become a person who cannot bear the sound of her own voice doing it, and she has never once said that to anybody, because it sounds like such a small thing and it is not.
What she has noticed lately is that the inside version has got shorter. Prayers that are only thought tend to compress. And she is beginning to suspect she is disappearing from her own praying.
If you went quiet somewhere along the way, come and sit down. I am not going to tell you what your quiet means, and I am not going to make you speak.

The embarrassment is not a message
Let us name the thing in the room first, gently, because it has been unnamed for a long time and that is part of its power.
What stopped you was not doubt. It was exposure. Hearing your own voice in a room with nothing coming back made the whole arrangement suddenly visible, and visible things can be judged, and so a part of you took the safest available route and went internal.
That is not faithlessness. That is a person protecting herself.
You are not ridiculous to God, and you never were. Nothing about your voice in an empty kitchen has ever looked foolish from His side of it. I am not offering you reassurance out of my own pocket. The written word says that the LORD taketh pleasure in his people (Psalm 149:4), which is a sentence about His disposition and not about our composure, and the Holy Spirit is what carries it into a flat at nine in the evening.
Scripture keeps the ones who spoke and the ones who only murmured
Here is what I want you to see, and it is not an instruction to start speaking again.
Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.Psalm 5:1
Two things in one verse, and they are different things. My words, which are said. My meditation, which in the Hebrew is closer to a murmur, a groan, a low sound barely shaped into anything. He asks God to attend to both, in the same breath, as though there is no rank between them.
Scripture never once treats the murmured prayer as the second class ticket. It puts the two side by side and hands them both up.
You have not been praying a lesser kind of prayer for two years. What runs in your head all day is prayer, named as such in the Word, received on the same terms. That is written down and kept on purpose, and His Spirit is the one who makes it land in a woman who has begun to think she went quiet in some way that mattered against her.
Compression is worth noticing
Now let me say the one honest thing about the inside version, and it is an observation rather than a correction.
Thought prayers compress. They lose the sentence that would have taken thirty seconds to say and would have surprised you halfway through. Speaking slows a person down enough to hear what they actually think, which is why people talk to themselves in cars and why saying a thing out loud so often changes it.
You are not owed a voice by God. You already have His attention and you have had it the whole time you were silent. Scripture says before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear (Isaiah 65:24), which puts His attention ahead of the sound entirely, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying two years of unspoken thread without one word of it going missing.
And if the going quiet has spread further than prayer lately, if you have stopped speaking to people too, if sleep has gone or the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
Here is the turn. It is not a promise that you will hear something back, because I have not been given that and I will not invent it.
God has not turned His face away from you, and He is near you in this quiet. That the room did not answer is not the same as the room being empty. The written word says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart (Psalm 34:18), and nigh is a word about distance and never about volume, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds it true in your actual kitchen tonight rather than in general.
I cannot tell you what God says next, or when. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the flat has not been empty for two years, and that going quiet never once moved you further from Him.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing, in your own voice. The standing under these words is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how confidently you have prayed. Scripture holds it up, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave, and what God says next, and when, is His, whatever He does with it, and no line here pretends to know.
- Embarrassment at the sound of my own voice, you are a feeling in a quiet room and you are not God finding me ridiculous. Psalm 149 says the Lord takes pleasure in His people, a sentence about His disposition and not about my composure, and the Holy Spirit makes it hold in a kitchen at nine in the evening. In the name of Jesus I stop letting you decide the volume.
- Habit of reading a room's quiet as a room's emptiness, God has never said you over me, and you are not standing here tonight. Isaiah 65 says that before they call, He answers, and while they are yet speaking, He hears, and His Spirit has carried two years of unspoken thread without losing a word of it. I am saying one sentence at ordinary volume.
- Father, You are nigh unto the broken hearted, and nigh is a word about distance and never about volume. I thank You that Psalm 5 hands up my words and my murmur in the same breath with no rank between them, and that Your Spirit never once graded which one arrived. Here is my one sentence, out loud, standing in the middle of the room.
Psalm 5:1
