He wrote it on an index card seven years ago and he has said it every night since.
Not because he thinks the words are magic. He wrote it because he had reached a point where he could no longer trust himself to say anything sensible about the thing at eleven at night, and a written prayer let him bring it without rebuilding it from scratch in the dark every time.
It worked. For years it worked. It was the one steady thing.
Then a few months ago he heard himself finish it and thought: I could have said that in my sleep. And the next thought came fast behind: seven years of exactly the same words, and nothing has ever come back, and what if the sameness is the reason.
He has started to suspect his own discipline. That is a particular kind of loneliness, because the discipline was the last piece of ground he had.
If you have got a prayer you say the same way every time and you have begun to wonder whether the form is the fault, come and sit down. I have no diagnosis for you and I am not going to invent one.

The repetition is not the reason
Let us deal with the suspicion directly, because it is quietly dismantling the one habit that has held you up.
Repetition is not what Jesus warned about. What He named was vain repetition, the piling up of words in the belief that more of them get a better result, and He said it about people who thought the volume of language was the lever. A short card read in the dark for seven years because a man could not trust himself to improvise is the opposite of that. It is somebody trying to say less, not more.
You are not being kept out by your own form. Seven years of the same words is not the reason heaven has been quiet, and it never was. I am not offering my reading of it. The written word says that the LORD looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and hearts are what He reads rather than phrasing, and the Holy Spirit holds that steady in a man at eleven at night holding an index card.
Notice what that verse does not do. It does not promise you an answer. It tells you what He is looking at, and stops.
Scripture keeps a man on a fixed schedule
Here is what steadied me on this, and it is not a suggestion that you change anything.
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.Psalm 55:17
That is a man on a timetable. Three fixed points in a day, named in advance, kept whether or not the feeling was there, and Scripture holds it up as the practice of a person under real pressure rather than as a compromise for people who cannot pray properly.
The whole songbook is fixed forms. Written prayers, said by many people, repeated for generations, and God gave that book to His own people as the thing they were to sing back to Him.
You have not fallen into a lesser kind of praying. The form in your hands is the form Scripture itself hands out, and the Word never once graded a prayer on originality. That is written and kept on purpose, and His Spirit is the one who makes it land in a man who has started to be suspicious of the only steady thing he has.
A card is a keel, not a cage
Something is worth saying about what the card actually does, because seven years has changed how it feels without changing what it is.
A written prayer is a keel. It keeps a person upright on a night when everything in them would have capsized, and it lets someone bring the thing without having to find the strength to construct it. That is a mercy, not a limitation, and it is why sailors do not resent the weight under the boat.
You are held up by that discipline rather than trapped in it, and God has been in every night of it. Scripture says that the steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD (Psalm 37:23), and ordered speaks of a settled arrangement rather than a spontaneous burst, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in the room for two thousand five hundred readings of the same card.
And if the seven years have cost more than anybody around the table knows, if sleep has gone, if the nights have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
Here is the turn. It is not an answer, because I have not been given one and I will not fabricate one.
God has not turned His face away from you, and He is near you in this quiet. That the same words have come back with nothing for seven years is not the same as nobody hearing them. The written word says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart (Psalm 34:18), and nigh is a word about distance and never about volume, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that true at your actual bedside tonight rather than somewhere in general.
I cannot tell you what God says about the thing on the card, or when. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the room has not been empty for two thousand five hundred nights, and that the form in your hand was never what stood between you.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. The standing under these words is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how faithfully you have kept the hour. Scripture holds it up, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely regular, and what God says about the thing on the card, and when, is His, whatever He does with it, and no line here pretends to know.
- Seven years of the same words, you are a discipline and you are not the reason heaven has been quiet. First Samuel 16 says the Lord looks on the heart, so phrasing was never the thing being read, and the Holy Spirit has been in the room for every night of it. In the name of Jesus I stop treating you as a fault.
- Suspicion that my own form is what emptied this, God has never said you over me, and you are not standing at this bedside tonight. Psalm 55 keeps a man praying at fixed hours under real pressure, and His Spirit made a written prayer the thing God's people sang back to Him for generations. I am reading the card again tonight, and I am adding one sentence of my own.
- Father, You are nigh unto the broken hearted, and nigh is a word about distance and never about volume. I thank You that Your Spirit has been present for two thousand five hundred readings, and that Psalm 37 calls ordered steps the mark of a man You are keeping. Here is the card, and here is one sentence never said before, and I am stopping there.
