He has run out of ways to say it. That is where he is now.
Three years ago he prayed with everything he had, and it was specific and it was confident and it was out loud. A year in, he was praying it more carefully, choosing words. Two years in, he started praying it different ways on purpose, in case one of them was the one. Scripture back at God. Then quietly, without asking for anything, just sitting there with the person's name.
And now he has got nothing left. He sits down to pray and the name comes up and after it there is a kind of blank, because everything he could think of to say he has already said hundreds of times.
The thought that arrived last week, and would not leave: maybe I am the problem. Maybe somebody else praying this would have got somewhere by now.
If you have prayed for one person until your words gave out, sit down on this step with me a minute. I am not going to explain your silence, and I am certainly not going to grade your praying.

The praying was never the variable
Let us take the worst thought out of the middle of this first, because it has been sitting there for a week doing damage.
The idea that a better pray-er would have got further is not from Scripture. It is not anywhere in Scripture. It is a thought that arrives dressed as humility and works like an accusation, and it is aimed at the person in the room who has loved the longest.
You are not the obstacle here. Three years of asking is not evidence against you, and God has never once been waiting on better wording. I am not saying that to be nice. The written word says that the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us (Romans 8:26), which puts the not knowing how to say it inside the normal Christian life rather than outside it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries what you cannot phrase.
Read that verse again some time when the blank comes. It does not say the Spirit helps people who have the words. It says He helps because we do not.
Scripture keeps a man who ran out
Here is what steadied me, and it is not a way of finding fresh words.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.Psalm 39:12
Look at where that psalm has come from. The man has already said, earlier in it, that he kept silence even from good, that his sorrow was stirred, that he could not work out what to say and so said nothing for a while. The psalm is a record of a man who ran out and then opened his mouth anyway, and it is in the book.
You have not prayed yourself past the edge of what counts. What you do now, sitting with a name and nothing after it, is prayer under the same name in the same book, and the Word never once measured it by how many ways it was phrased. That is written and kept deliberately, and His Spirit is the one who makes it land in a man who has begun to think the problem is him.
A name is a whole prayer
Something has to be said about the blank after the name, because it feels like failure and it is not.
Watch what happens in the Gospels when people bring somebody to Jesus. They do not bring arguments. They bring the person. Four men take a roof apart and lower a friend down and the record does not preserve one word any of them said. It preserves what they did with the man.
You are doing exactly that. Bringing the name and nothing else is not a lesser prayer, and it never was. Scripture says casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and the casting is the whole verb, with no requirement about eloquence attached to it, and the Holy Spirit, not the wording, is the one who carries a bare name up as fully as He carried the confident version three years ago.
And if these three years have taken more out of you than anyone knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
Here is the turn, then, and it is not a promise about the person you love, because I have not been given one and I will not invent one.
God has not turned His face away from you, and He is near you in this quiet. The blank after their name is not the same as nobody being on the other side of it. The written word says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart (Psalm 34:18), and nigh is a word about distance rather than volume, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it true in your actual room tonight rather than in general.
I cannot tell you what God does about the thing you have asked three years for. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that not one of those prayers was graded, and that running out of ways to say it has never once been the same as running out of standing to say it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. The authority in them is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how well you have prayed these three years. Scripture is what it stands on, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely faithful, and what God does about the person you love, and when, is His, however He answers, and no sentence here pretends to know how.
- Three years of asking for one person, you are a length of love and you are not proof that God stopped listening. Romans 8 says the Spirit helps our weakness because we do not know how to pray as we ought, and His Spirit has carried every version I tried. In the name of Jesus I stop reading you as a failure of mine.
- Accusation that somebody else would have got further by now, God's word about me does not read like you, and you are not sitting on this step tonight. First Peter 5 says cast all your care upon Him because He cares for you, and the casting is the whole verb, with nothing about eloquence attached, and His Spirit lifts a bare name as fully as a fluent one. I am bringing the person tonight, the way the four men brought their friend.
- Father, You are nigh unto the broken hearted, and nigh is a word about distance and never about volume. I thank You that Your Spirit makes intercession where my words gave out, and that Psalm 39 kept a man who ran out and opened his mouth anyway. Here is their name, out loud, on its own, and there is nothing after it.
