It happened so slowly that he cannot date it.
Seven years ago he started praying about one situation, properly, the way a man prays when something matters. He would talk to God about it. He would say the hard parts out loud. It was a conversation.
Now it is a shape. He gets into the car, and the shape happens, and it has the same words in the same order and it takes about eleven seconds, and then he turns the radio on.
What he noticed last month, and could not stop noticing, is that the shape has no You in it. It has the situation, and the request, and a kind of closing formula. But the Person the whole thing is supposedly addressed to has been quietly edited out, and he could not tell you when.
He is not angry with God. That is not what this is. It is that a man can wear a prayer down the way a river wears a stone, until what is left is smooth and fast and has almost nothing on its surface.
If your praying has worn down to a shape, come and sit under these lanterns. Nothing about seven years of asking is being called wrong here.

Wearing down is what carrying does
Let us name what actually happened, because the temptation is to call it coldness and it is not.
A prayer said several thousand times compresses. That is not a spiritual failure, it is a property of language: any sentence repeated that often loses its edges. The Person did not get removed by a decision. He got worn out of the sentence by use, which is a different thing entirely and carries no guilt with it.
You are not a cold man. Nothing about a worn prayer has ever changed who is standing in the car with you. I am not saying that to be easy on you. The written word says he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13), which rests the whole arrangement on His constancy rather than on the texture of our asking, and the Holy Spirit, not the wording, is the one who makes that hold on an ordinary drive.
What comes down is a face
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a fresh way of phrasing the request.
Go and look at what Scripture says heaven sends, and notice how personal the answers are.
When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.Psalm 27:8
A face. Not a resolution, not an outcome, not a change in a situation. The invitation God issues in that verse is to His face, and the man's answer is to take Him up on exactly that.
And when you follow the openings in the Bible, they all end in a Person. Rain on ground that had gone hard. Bread on the floor of a wilderness. A word to a man who had nothing left to say. The Spirit over a river. The Son over a stable. God has never once sent a solution and stayed home.
You are receiving a Person rather than a resolution, and the Word has been arranging it that way from the beginning. That is written down in the invitation itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who lands it in a man who has been running an eleven second shape for years.
The situation is still allowed in the room
Something has to be said here, or you will overcorrect by Thursday and start feeling guilty for mentioning the thing at all.
Bring it. Bring all of it. Scripture is full of people naming their situations in detail, and nobody is ever told to be less specific about their trouble.
You have permission for both at once, and it was never a choice between the request and the Person. Scripture says casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), where the care goes over and the relationship is the reason it can, and it is the Holy Spirit, and He is the one who has carried every one of those eleven second prayers without ever asking for a better version.
And if these seven years have cost more than anybody at this table knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about the situation, because I have not been given one and I will not invent it.
God Himself is what comes down over your life, and He arrives in person. You are not waiting on a delivery, you are receiving the One who sends it. The written word says the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (John 1:14), and dwelt is the word for pitching a tent where people actually live, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that true in your actual car tomorrow rather than in general.
I cannot tell you what God does about the situation, or when. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the You worn out of your sentence was never worn out of the room, and that seven years of a shape were seven years of being heard.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. You speak these standing in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how warm your praying has felt lately. What it rests on is the written word, and what makes it living is the Holy Spirit rather than merely habitual, and what God does about the situation, and when, is His, in His own way, and nothing written here knows what that is.
- Request I have worn down to a shape, you are a sentence about a circumstance and you are not the whole of what I came for. Second Timothy 2 says He abides faithful and cannot deny Himself, which rests this on His constancy and not on the texture of my asking, and the Holy Spirit has been in the car for every one of the eleven seconds. In the name of Jesus I stop reading you as coldness.
- Suspicion that a worn prayer means a cold man, God's word about me does not read like you, and you are not riding with me tomorrow. First Peter 5 says cast all your care upon Him because He cares for you, so the care goes over because the relationship is already there, and His Spirit never once asked me for a better version. I am bringing the whole thing tonight, and not the shape.
- Father, You said seek My face, and Psalm 27 has a man answering that exact invitation rather than negotiating a different one. I thank You that Your Spirit was never edited out of the car, however smooth my sentence got. Here is the situation by its real name, out loud, and here is Your name after it.
