She knows what it feels like when a room changes. That is the problem.
She has been in the meetings. She has felt the moment when a hundred people go somewhere together, when the air seems to thicken and something is plainly happening, and she has wept in those rooms and meant every second of it.
Then she goes home. And her front room has a lamp and a sofa and a radiator that ticks, and she sits down to pray in it and the air does not thicken and nothing at all seems to happen, and after a few minutes she gets up and finds something to do.
Somewhere along the way she reached a conclusion she has never said out loud: God moves in rooms like that, and I live in a room like this.
So she has become a woman who travels for God. Who waits for the next conference to have something real, and gets through the fourteen weeks in between on the memory of the last one, and quietly believes her ordinary house is a place where God does not particularly go.
If you have measured your prayer life against the temperature of a room, come and sit in mine. Nothing you have ever been in is going to be mocked here, and neither are you.
Those rooms were real
Start here, because everything else depends on it: the meetings were not fake and I am not about to take them off you.
Something genuine happens when God's people gather. Scripture expects it, describes it and commands it, and the Holy Spirit is the one that does it. What you felt in those rooms was not manufactured, and I would not want you to leave this page suspicious of the best moments you have had.
The slip is one word wide. It happened when the thickening air went from being an effect to being the evidence, and once a feeling becomes the evidence, every room without it becomes a verdict.
You are not further from God in your front room than you were in that meeting. The nearness has never once been indexed to the atmosphere in a building. I am not saying that to console you. The written word says that God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24), which took the whole question off geography permanently, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold in a woman sitting on her sofa hearing the radiator tick.
Where He was actually found
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a technique for charging your living room.
There is a man in the Bible who had just seen fire fall on a mountain in front of a nation. Then he ran, and collapsed, and wanted to die, and God came to him at a cave.
And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.1 Kings 19:12
Read the order. Wind, earthquake, fire. Every impressive atmosphere available, and the text says plainly He was not in them. The voice came after, and it was still, and it was small, and the man wrapped his face in his mantle because he knew exactly who was speaking.
Scripture goes out of its way to name the dramatic and then to say He was not in it, and then to put Him in the quiet.
You are not waiting on the right conditions. The Word records God passing over three spectacular atmospheres and speaking in a small voice to a man who was flat on the ground, and it never once made the air in a room the measure. That is written down and left there deliberately, and His Spirit is the one who makes it land in a woman who has been holding her house against her.
Do not swap it for a subtler one
Something has to go into the space we are clearing, or by Sunday you will be waiting for a different sign. A shiver. A sense. A particular quality of stillness that means He is really here this time.
That is the same condition wearing quieter clothes, and it will do the same work.
You have His presence as a settled fact rather than a detectable one, and it is not something you will get better at sensing. He is with you when you feel it and when you do not, on identical terms. Scripture says he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Hebrews 13:5), which is stated as a permanent arrangement rather than a recurring event, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a room where nothing whatsoever appears to be happening.
And if the last few years have cost more than anybody around you knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
Now the turn, and it is not a way to make your house feel like a conference.
God is open toward you right now, in that room, because that is who He is. You did not earn this and you cannot lose it, and there is no key in your hand that He has been waiting on. The written word says lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world (Matthew 28:20), and alway is a word that leaves no room for a room, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that true about your actual sofa this evening rather than about people in general.
I am not going to tell you what God does next, or when. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the fourteen weeks between conferences were never fourteen weeks of absence, and that the ticking radiator was never proof of anything.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in your front room, in your own voice. You speak these standing in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of what a room felt like. What it rests on is the written word, and what makes it living is the Holy Spirit rather than merely settled, and what God does next, and when, is His, in His own way, and nothing written here knows what that is.
- Quiet front room with nothing happening in it, you are a room and you are not a reading on whether God is here. John 4 says God is Spirit and took the whole question off geography, and the Holy Spirit makes that hold beside a ticking radiator. In the name of Jesus I stop letting you file a report on Him.
- Habit of waiting for the air to change before I believe He came, you are a sentence God did not say, and you are not sitting on this sofa tonight. First Kings 19 names the wind and the earthquake and the fire and says He was not in them, and His Spirit spoke in a small voice to a man flat on the ground. I am praying here, in this house, tonight.
- Father, You said lo, I am with you alway, and Matthew 28 leaves no room for a room in that word. I thank You that Your Spirit never once made the temperature of a building the measure of Your nearness. The paper is face down on the table, and I am not traveling for You any more.
