Here is a small test she failed and could not stop thinking about.
Somebody at a study asked the group to imagine God speaking to them personally, and to write down the first sentence that came. Everyone else wrote something. She sat with a pen and produced nothing for a while, and then wrote what actually arrived, which was: you know what you need to work on.
Not cruel. Not shouting. Just the tone she has heard in her head for as long as she can remember, which is the tone of a good manager with a fair point.
She has never once, in twenty two years of following God, imagined Him saying He is pleased with her. She can construct the sentence theologically. She cannot hear it. And the gap between what she can construct and what she can hear is where she actually lives.
If the voice you hear when you imagine God is always the corrective one, come and sit down. Nothing about your list is going to be gone through here.
Whose voice that actually is
Let us look at the voice itself, because it has been running unchallenged for two decades.
It has a tone. Reasonable, patient, slightly weary, entirely fair. And a tone like that is learned, and it was learned somewhere, from somebody, long before God ever came into it. It does not carry the accent of Scripture. It carries the accent of a room a person grew up in.
The tell is what it never does. It never delights. It never expresses affection first. It never says anything for the sake of saying it. A voice that only ever corrects is not the voice of a father, it is the voice of an inspection.
You are not being inspected. Nothing about your list determines how the Father is disposed toward you, and no week has ever moved it. I am not saying that to be encouraging. The written word says he hath made us accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6), where the acceptance is located in Christ rather than in the one accepted, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not the sentence, who makes it live in a woman with a blank page and a pen.
The verse where He is the one singing
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a technique for hearing a nicer voice.
Read this one slowly, because most people have met it on a card and never actually looked at what it says God is doing.
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save; he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.Zephaniah 3:17
Count the verbs. He rejoices, He rests in His love, He sings. That is a description of God's own emotional life with respect to His people, written by a prophet whose book is otherwise full of judgement, and it is the only place in the Bible where God is described as singing.
Nothing in that sentence is conditional on the performance of the person He is singing over.
You are being rejoiced over rather than assessed, and the Word puts God Himself in the position of the one singing. That is written down in a book about judgement, of all places, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it register in a woman who has never once imagined that sentence directed at her.
The pleasure is not a wage
Something has to be said very carefully here, or the whole thing gets rebuilt by Thursday in a slightly kinder shape.
The Father's pleasure is not a payment for a corrected life. It is not something that arrives when the list finally clears, and it never was, and if it were, then nobody in Scripture would ever have had it.
You have His pleasure now, in the middle of the list, on grounds that have nothing to do with the list at all. Scripture says that we love him, because he first loved us (1 John 4:19), where first fixes the order permanently and puts His move before ours, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying that into a woman's actual kitchen for twenty two years while she could not hear it.
And if the voice has got heavier lately, if sleep has gone, if the mornings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So here is where the whole thing turns, and it is not a promise that you will start hearing a warmer voice this week.
The Father said it over His Son and you are in His Son. What was spoken from that opened sky covers you, and you are not auditioning for it. The written word says as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God (John 1:12), which makes the standing a gift rather than a grade, and the Holy Spirit is the One who proves it true about you specifically rather than about believers in general.
I cannot tell you when the voice in your head changes, or whether it does. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the tone you have been hearing was learned in a room long before God was in the conversation, and that He is described in His own book as singing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the kitchen, in your own voice. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how the week went. The written word is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what keeps it living rather than merely correct, and what God does next, and when, is His, in His own way and in His own time, and nothing on this page claims to know which.
- Running list of what I still need to fix, you are a voice in my own head and you are not what the Father says over me. Zephaniah 3 has God rejoicing over His people with singing, in a book about judgement, and the Holy Spirit put that verb there without a single condition attached. In the name of Jesus I take you out of His mouth.
- Habit of hearing an inspection where a Father is speaking, you are not God's word about me and you are not standing in this kitchen tomorrow. First John 4 says we love Him because He first loved us, which fixes the order permanently, and His Spirit has been carrying that into this room for twenty two years. I am reading the sentence out loud today and putting my own name after it.
- Father, You are mighty in the midst of me and You rest in Your love, and Zephaniah 3 says You joy over Your people with singing. I thank You that Your Spirit made the acceptance sit in the Beloved and never in the one accepted. Here are Your words at the water, out loud, and here is my name after them.
