She would be mortified if anybody heard it, and it is the most consistent thing about her praying.

Before the request, there is a summary. Not boastful. If anything it is more like a reference letter written by a careful person: I have been faithful in this, I have kept going with that, I have not walked away from the thing that would have been easier to walk away from.

She is not telling God anything He does not know. She is aware of that.

What she is doing is establishing the account, and she has done it for so long that she cannot begin without it. If she tries to ask straight out, something in her feels exposed, the way a person feels walking into a serious room without the file under their arm.

And the strange arithmetic underneath it: on a week when the record is thin, she asks for less. She has noticed this and never once said it to a person.

The tell is what happens on a thin week

Let us look at the strongest evidence, which is not the summary itself but what happens when there is nothing to put in it.

On a good week the request is fuller. On a thin week it shrinks. That is not devotion adjusting itself, that is a woman spending what she believes she has, and it reveals what the summary is actually for.

It is not gratitude and it is not context. It is a balance being presented before a withdrawal.

And that is worth seeing without shame attached, because nobody built that on purpose. It is what a person does when they have understood, somewhere early, that access is earned and reported.

You are not drawing on an account. Nothing in that summary has ever been what admitted you, and no thin week has ever reduced what you may ask for. I am not saying it to be encouraging. The written word says not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us (Titus 3:5), which removes the record from the transaction entirely, and the Holy Spirit is what carries it into a back yard on a thin week.

The righteousness Paul refuses

Here is what changed this for me, and it is not an instruction to stop being faithful.

Paul lists his own credentials in that chapter, and they are genuinely impressive, and then he does something extraordinary with the list.

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ.Philippians 3:9

Not having mine own righteousness. He is not saying his record was fake or that the faithfulness never happened. He is saying he does not want to be found standing on it, because it is the wrong ground to be standing on when the moment comes.

He wants a righteousness that came from somewhere else entirely, and he calls the alternative loss rather than merely insufficient.

You are standing on a righteousness that is not your own, and the Word has a man refusing his own record on purpose. That is written down as a deliberate exchange, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it land in a woman with a reference letter she cannot stop reading.

Being faithful stays

Something has to be said very plainly, because by Sunday this could become an argument for letting things slide.

Keep being faithful in every one of them. They are good, they matter, and they are worth doing for their own sake and for the sake of the people they touch.

What comes off is only their job at the door: the sense that they are a reference which has to be presented, and that a bad month reduces your entitlement to ask.

You have a standing that a thin week cannot dent and a strong one cannot improve. Scripture says he hath made us accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6), where the acceptance sits in Christ and not in a record, and the Holy Spirit is the One who has been in that yard for every summary a woman ever gave.

And if this has cost more than anybody at this table knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
